In Saint-Nicolas (Flanders, Belgium) police have arrested a man who was allegedly planning terror attacks. According to VRT, the Flemish TV and radio station, the man was also planning to attack their building(s) or network studios in an attempt to overthrow the Belgian state.
The 23-year-old man from the Netherlands was apprehended last Wednesday. The suspect tried to recruit people in a bar, to carry out attacks. The Dutch man also had a manifesto in which he described how he wanted to overthrow the Belgian state.
He was planning to broadcast his message live on TV, with force if necessary. The man was also targeting political institutions said Antoon Schotsaert, spokesman for the prosecutor’s office in Dendermonde.
The suspect was arrested and psychiatrists were appointed to examine him. “There are certain elements that indicate that there are psychological problems associated with his case,” stated Schotsaert. Yet, the prosecutor’s office takes the man’s plans serious. “It were real and alarming threats of a coming attack.”
For now, the Dutch suspect remains in the psychiatric ward of the prison of Bruges.
